No More Weddings

2 Sep

Confession: I’m a pastor, and I’m tired of doing weddings.

Why?

…Because people spend countless hours planning for the wedding and very little time preparing for the marriage.  It takes work, sacrifice, and preparation to be a husband or a wife!

…Because most people think that romance = love.  It doesn’t.  Love is a commitment for life.  Not something you say when it feels good, and then abandon your commitment ten years later because “I’m just not happy anymore.”

…Because people act like they know better than God when it comes to marriage.  They make up their own Bible verses like “God wants me to be happy” and expect marriage to be a “happily ever after.”

…Because, like, well, um… I’m not the world’s greatest husband, either.  I’m standing up with a Bible and a couple and pronouncing them husband and wife, but I know my own failures.  Jennie and God deserve so much better.

…Because divorce destroys.  Do you have a better word?  It happens in a majority of marriages, and it absolutely destroys people.

Now, I’ll still “perform a ceremony,” but I really want to help future husbands and wives think through all the angles and all the guidelines God has given for healthy marriage and family. Without His help, we always mess it up.
